To celebrate the Indian culture and tradition through language, Amazon.in today launched “The Matrabhasha Store” in collaboration with the National Book Trust, an apex body established by the Government of India (Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development). This unique store will offer a diverse selection of over 1.9 lakh books across Indian languages including Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and Odia amongst others. Dedicated towards driving discoverability for books, the Matrabhasha Store supports small Indian businesses and direct-to-consumer start-ups and entrepreneurs across India.

The ‘Matrabhasha Store’ offers an opportunity for customers to stay connected to their mother tongue.
Indian literature, compared to any other literature in the world has played a dominant role in the preservation and propagation of our culture and traditions. The storefront not only enables the customers but also encourages sellers to offer a wide and diverse selection of Indian language books on Amazon.in. Shri Jogi (Girish Hatwar), renowned Kannada Author said “Indian literature has played a dominant role in the preservation and propagation of our culture and traditions. Indian languages are the bridge to a better future, unlocking innate skills. I am delighted that the Matrabhasha Store on Amazon.in will be providing its customers a chance to connect with this rich cultural heritage. I encourage everyone to read books in regional languages, especially children, and not let the local language become extinct.”

Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, National Book Trust said “India is a country of diverse languages, with over 121 mother tongues with more than 10,000 speakers and more than 25 active scripts. To celebrate this multilingual diversity, National Book Trust India has been publishing books in more than 70 Indian languages to ensure that every reader in India has reading material in their own mother tongue. This is in tune with Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision and as per the new National Education Policy 2020, which promotes multilingualism and reading material available and accessible to all in Indian languages. The initiative of Amazon India in opening a dedicated online storefront for books in Indian languages is a commendable step towards promoting linguistic diversity and cultural heritage of India. NBT-India supports Amazon India’s effort to amplify regional voices, encourage authors, and connect readers with the cultural tapestry of our nation through their initiative of Matrabhasha Storefront”.

In 2022, with focused efforts to drive the discoverability of Indian language books, Amazon enabled 1000+ new sellers in the category with over 55,000 new products added from these sellers. Apart from the major publishers like NBT-India, Manjul Publishing, Prabhat Prakashan, Rajkamal Prakashan and DC Books, Amazon.in encourages small publishers to operate across the country to sell books in regional language. Amazon is constantly on the lookout to onboard books across all Indian languages and plans to list more Indian languages catering to readers across regions.
