As Black Friday approaches, Check Point Research has identified an alarming 89% surge in newly registered websites themed around Black Friday compared to last year. Many of these websites are designed to deceive consumers and facilitate cybercrime, with over 3% classified as risky or outright malicious.
Key Findings:
· Significant Increase in Malicious Websites: An 89% growth in Black Friday-themed websites compared to 2023, tripling against 2022 figures.
· Deceptive Mimicry of Brands: Fake websites targeting renowned global brands like Stüssy, Longchamp, and J.Crew, as well as boutique labels, often feature coordinated layouts and designs.
· Reused Phishing Campaigns: Attackers recycle phishing scams from previous years with minor adjustments, directing victims to counterfeit sites offering fake deals.
· Examples of Scams:
o Rolex: Fraudulent emails offering luxury watch discounts redirect users to websites such as www[.]hotwatch[.]su.
o Louis Vuitton: Similar phishing emails promising "90% off" sales link to fake sites like www[.]hottest-bag[.]com.
How to Stay Safe While Shopping:
1. Check Website URLs: Ensure the website uses HTTPS and displays a padlock icon.
2. Avoid Unrealistic Offers: If a deal seems too good to be true, it likely is.
3. Limit Personal Information Shared: Avoid providing unnecessary sensitive details.
4. Use Credit Cards Over Debit Cards: Credit cards offer better fraud protection.
